silikagelit

Silikagelit is a synthetic amorphous form of silicon dioxide (SiO2) that is highly porous. It is produced through the reaction of sodium silicate with a mineral acid, followed by a drying process. The resulting material has a vast internal surface area, which makes it an excellent desiccant. Desiccants are substances that absorb moisture from the surrounding environment.

Silikagelit typically appears as transparent or translucent beads or granules. It is chemically inert, non-toxic, and non-corrosive, making it safe for use in various applications. It can absorb significant amounts of water vapor without changing its physical state, although its capacity decreases as it becomes saturated.

The primary use of silikagelit is to control humidity and prevent moisture damage. It is commonly found in small packets included in packaging for electronics, leather goods, pharmaceuticals, and food products to protect them from spoilage, corrosion, or degradation caused by moisture. These packets are often labeled with a warning not to eat the contents.

Silikagelit can also be used as a catalyst support, a chromatographic stationary phase, and in oil purification. Some forms of silikagelit contain moisture indicators, such as cobalt chloride, which change color (typically from blue to pink) as the gel absorbs moisture, signaling when it is saturated and needs to be regenerated. Regeneration can usually be achieved by heating the silikagelit, which drives off the absorbed moisture.
