Silikageler are amorphous and porous forms of silicon dioxide (SiO2). They are typically produced synthetically from sodium silicate. Silikagel is a desiccant, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. This is due to its highly porous structure, which provides a large surface area for adsorption. Each gram of silikagel can have a surface area of up to 1,000 square meters.

Silikagel is commonly used in packaging to protect goods from moisture damage. It is often found in small packets inside shoe boxes, electronics, and food products. These packets help to prevent mold, spoilage, and corrosion. The material is non-toxic and safe for use with food and pharmaceuticals, though it should not be ingested.

The appearance of silikagel can vary. It is usually a transparent, granular solid. However, it can also be manufactured with indicating dyes. These dyes change color when the silikagel becomes saturated with moisture, providing a visual cue that the desiccant needs to be replaced or regenerated. Common indicating dyes include cobalt chloride (which turns from blue to pink) or orange dye (which turns from orange to green). Cobalt chloride is now less commonly used due to environmental concerns.

Silikagel can be regenerated by heating it, which drives off the absorbed moisture. This process allows for the desiccant to be reused multiple times. Beyond its role as a drying agent, silikagel also finds applications in chromatography, as a catalyst support, and in the petroleum refining industry. Its versatility and effectiveness in moisture control make it a widely utilized material in various industrial and consumer products.
