Silicon nitride exists mainly in two crystal forms, alpha- and beta-Si3N4, which transform during processing to form densely packed microstructures. Dense components are obtained by hot pressing or pressureless sintering, often with sintering aids such as yttria (Y2O3) and magnesia (MgO) that promote densification and control microstructure. Rare-earth oxides may be added to further improve sintering behavior and mechanical properties.

Applications of silicon nitride span demanding mechanical and high-temperature roles. It is widely used in rolling-element bearings and valve-train components, turbocharger rotors, piston rings, cutting tools, and wear parts. In the medical field, silicon nitride has been explored for orthopedic implants due to its wear resistance and biocompatibility. Its combination of strength, toughness, and thermal stability makes it a common choice for components subject to high stress and heat.
