Signaalitöötlusüksusi, commonly referred to as STUs, are fundamental components within digital signal processing systems. They are specialized hardware or software modules designed to perform specific mathematical operations on digital signals. These operations can include filtering, amplification, modulation, demodulation, and various forms of transformation. The primary goal of a STU is to manipulate signal data to extract useful information, reduce noise, compress data, or prepare it for further processing or transmission.

In hardware, STUs are often implemented as dedicated integrated circuits, such as digital signal processors (DSPs) or field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). These specialized processors are optimized for the high-speed, parallel computations required for signal processing tasks. Software implementations of STUs exist within general-purpose processors, where algorithms are executed as part of a larger program. The choice between hardware and software implementation depends on factors like processing speed requirements, flexibility, cost, and power consumption.

The functionality of a STU is defined by the algorithms it executes. For example, a finite impulse response (FIR) filter STU would perform a weighted sum of past input samples to produce an output, effectively smoothing or shaping the signal. Conversely, an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter STU would use both past input and output samples, allowing for more complex frequency response characteristics. The collective operation of multiple STUs within a system enables sophisticated signal analysis and manipulation, critical for applications ranging from telecommunications and audio processing to medical imaging and radar systems.
