Sifters are devices that separate particles by size using a mesh screen, allowing smaller particles to pass through while retaining larger ones. They come in a variety of forms, from kitchen tools to industrial equipment, and operate by gravity, vibration, or agitation.

In the kitchen, a flour sifter is a small cylindrical or bowl-shaped tool with a fine mesh and often a crank or press that rattles the flour through, aerating and removing lumps to improve texture in baking. Materials include stainless steel and aluminum; sizes vary.

In laboratories and industry, sifters are used for particle size analysis, with stacks of sieves of decreasing mesh sizes. The process, often called sieve analysis, uses a sieve shaker or manual shaking to separate materials by grain size for soils, minerals, or pharmaceuticals. Industrial sifters may be larger and include vibratory or rotary mechanisms to handle bulk materials like sand, gravel, or ore.

Other applications include seed cleaning in agriculture, recycling and waste processing, and archaeology where sieves help recover microartifacts from sediments.

Maintenance and safety considerations include cleaning after use to prevent clogging, inspecting the mesh for wear or damage, and replacing screens as needed. Store sifters in a dry location to prevent rust and deformation of the mesh, and use appropriate screens for the material being processed to avoid damage or injury.
