Sidobanden is the Swedish term for sidebands, the spectral components that appear at frequencies above and below a carrier when a carrier wave is modulated. The concept is fundamental in radio and signal processing and describes how information-bearing modulation redistributes energy into new frequency components.

In amplitude modulation (AM), a carrier frequency fc combined with a modulating signal produces symmetric upper and lower sidebands at fc ± fm for each modulation frequency component fm. Single-sideband (SSB) techniques suppress one or both sidebands and sometimes the carrier to improve spectral efficiency. In frequency modulation (FM), modulation generates an infinite series of sidebands with amplitudes given by Bessel functions; practical bandwidth is estimated using Carson’s rule.

Sidebands are important for bandwidth allocation, interference management and receiver design. They are visible in a frequency-domain analysis with instruments such as spectrum analyzers and are critical in applications including broadcast and two-way radio, radar, telemetry, and optical heterodyne systems.

The study of sidebands spans theoretical descriptions (Fourier analysis, modulation theory) and practical techniques (filtering, single-sideband generation, and demodulation). Managing sidebands affects power distribution and adjacent-channel interference; techniques like filtering and selective suppression are used to meet regulatory and performance requirements.

Aside from its technical meaning, the term can be used more generally in Swedish to describe supporting or secondary bands in musical contexts. When used in technical literature, sidobanden most often refers specifically to the modulation-produced spectral lines surrounding a carrier.
