Shurikenjutsu is the Japanese martial art of throwing weapons. The term is often translated as "shuriken throwing art" but can also encompass a broader range of techniques. Shuriken themselves are primarily used as secondary weapons for distraction or to inflict minor wounds, rather than as primary offensive tools.

There are two main categories of shuriken: bo-shuriken and hira-shuriken (or shaken). Bo-shuriken are stick-like blades, often sharpened on one side or at the tip. Hira-shuriken, more commonly known as "throwing stars," are flat, multi-pointed metal objects. Various shapes and sizes exist within these categories, each with its own specific throwing methods.

The practice of shurikenjutsu involves mastering the grip, stance, and throwing motion to achieve accuracy and control. Different techniques are employed depending on the type of shuriken, the distance to the target, and the desired effect. It was historically taught as a supplementary skill within larger martial arts systems, such as ninjutsu and various samurai traditions. While shuriken were sometimes depicted as deadly weapons in popular culture, their actual battlefield utility was more nuanced, often serving to disrupt an opponent's focus or create an opening for a more decisive attack. Modern practitioners may study shurikenjutsu as part of a broader historical martial arts curriculum or as a distinct discipline.
