Shunt resistor is a low-value resistor used to measure electrical current by producing a small, well-defined voltage drop across it. It is placed in series with the load so that all current flows through it. The current I is inferred from Ohm's law: I = V_shunt / R_shunt, where V_shunt is the voltage across the shunt and R_shunt is its resistance. The device is designed to minimize power loss and voltage drop in normal operation.

Design goals emphasize low resistance, high current rating, and stability with temperature. The resistance should be small enough to limit power dissipation while still providing a measurable voltage for sensing. Typical shunts have tolerances from 0.1% to 1% and temperature coefficients in the tens of ppm per degree Celsius. Materials include manganin, constantan, and specialized copper alloys; constructions range from low-inductance foil or wire elements to metal-housed sense resistors. Adequate power rating and low inductance improve measurement accuracy, especially for fast transients.

Sensing configurations include low-side sensing, where the shunt is near ground, and high-side sensing, where it sits near the supply. High-side requires instrumentation amplifiers with high common-mode voltage tolerance. In either case, attention to parasitics, thermal effects, and proper shielding improves accuracy. Common sources of error are self-heating, temperature drift, contact resistance, PCB leakage, and lead inductance, particularly at high frequencies.

Applications span DC power supplies, motor controllers, battery management systems, energy meters, and test equipment. Shunt resistors are favored for their accuracy and direct voltage-output sense, though they dissipate heat and consume voltage headroom. Compared with Hall-effect sensors, shunts offer higher precision for a given size but require a physical current path and incur steady I^2R losses; Hall sensors avoid power loss but may exhibit greater offsets and drift.
