A shrublandscape is a landscape whose structure is dominated by shrubs, either in natural communities or in intentional design. It emphasizes shrub canopies as the main vertical element, with consideration for groundcovers, grasses, and occasional trees. Shrublandscape designs are often chosen for drought tolerance, low maintenance, or to mimic natural scrub ecosystems.

Natural shrublands occur in regions with dry summers or arid climates, including Mediterranean, chaparral, fynbos, savanna edges, sagebrush steppe, and scrublands in temperate zones. They host diverse plant communities adapted to fire, drought, and poor soils, and provide habitat for birds and insects.

In landscape design, shrublandscape approaches create structure, seasonal color, and privacy while reducing mowing and water use. Designers select a mix of evergreen and deciduous shrubs for year-round form, texture, and color; plant spacing to ensure air movement; and include mulch for soil moisture retention. Native species are often favored to support local wildlife and resilience.

Benefits include erosion control on slopes, habitat for pollinators, carbon storage in woody biomass, and microclimate regulation. Shrubs can function as windbreaks and act as transitional edges between open and built spaces. Fire risk and drought sensitivity are important considerations in many shrubland regions, requiring appropriate species choice and maintenance.

Maintenance focuses on pruning to maintain shape and health, irrigation management, weed control, and monitoring for pests and diseases. In restoration contexts, management may emphasize removing invasive species, reestablishing native shrubs, and reducing fuel loads in fire-prone zones.
