Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. This is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in nerve tissue near the spinal cord and brain. In some individuals, the virus can reactivate later in life, leading to shingles.

The most common symptom of shingles is a painful rash that typically appears on one side of the body. This rash often begins as a band or strip of blisters that can be intensely uncomfortable. Before the rash appears, many people experience prodromal symptoms such as itching, tingling, or a burning sensation in the affected area. The pain associated with shingles can range from mild to severe and may persist even after the rash has cleared, a condition known as postherpetic neuralgia.

Shingles is not contagious in the same way as chickenpox. However, the fluid from the shingles blisters contains the varicella-zoster virus. Individuals who have never had chickenpox or been vaccinated against it can contract chickenpox from direct contact with the open blisters of someone with shingles. They cannot contract shingles itself.

Risk factors for developing shingles include being over the age of 50, having a weakened immune system due to illness or medication, and experiencing significant stress. There is a vaccine available to prevent shingles, which is recommended for adults aged 50 and older. Early treatment with antiviral medications can help reduce the severity and duration of the infection and lower the risk of complications.
