shilajit

Shilajit is a sticky, tar-like resin that exudes from rocks in high mountain regions, notably the Himalayas, formed over centuries through the decomposition of plant matter and microbial activity. It is traditionally harvested, purified, and processed into resin, powder, or capsule forms.

Chemically, shilajit is rich in fulvic acid and various minerals; the fulvic acid fraction is thought to mediate many of its proposed effects by aiding nutrient absorption and acting as an antioxidant. In Ayurveda, shilajit is classified as a rasayana, or rejuvenating substance, reputed to enhance vitality, stamina, and cognitive function.

Scientific evidence on shilajit is limited and mixed. Some studies report improvements in fatigue, reproductive function and testosterone levels, or cognitive measures, but many trials are small, short, or of uncertain quality. Overall, robust, high-quality evidence supporting disease treatment is lacking.

Safety and quality concerns are central. Shilajit can be contaminated with heavy metals or microbial toxins if improperly processed. Products vary in purity; reputable sources test for metals and purity. Side effects may include digestive upset, allergic reactions, or interactions with medications. It is generally not advised for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, people with iron overload conditions, or those taking certain medications unless advised by a clinician. In many countries, shilajit is sold as a dietary supplement and is not approved to diagnose, treat, or cure any disease; regulatory status and quality control vary by jurisdiction.
