Shapingforming refers to a set of manufacturing processes that create or modify workpieces by altering their geometry, either through material removal (shaping) or by plastic deformation (forming). The two categories are often considered separately, but they share the goal of producing specific shapes and features in metals, polymers, or composites.

Shaping is a subtractive process in which material is removed by a cutting tool arranged on a movable ram. In traditional shaping, the tool moves in a straight line while the workpiece remains stationary or moves slowly. Planing and slotting are related operations with similar principles. Shaping is typically used to produce flat surfaces, slots, keyways, and simple profiles, often in a series of passes. It emphasizes dimensional accuracy and surface finish, but it can be slower and less common in high-volume production compared with other milling methods.

Forming comprises processes that reshape material without removing significant amounts of it, instead relying on plastic deformation. Common forming methods include rolling, bending, extrusion, drawing, forging, stamping, and deep drawing. Forming can produce near-net shapes with good material utilization and mechanical properties enhanced by work hardening or grain alignment. It often requires ductile materials and specialized tooling or dies, and it can impose geometric or size constraints, such as limitations on sharp internal corners or complex hollow sections.

Both shaping and forming are foundational in manufacturing, used across industries to produce components ranging from simple fasteners to complex structural parts. Selection depends on material behavior, desired geometry, production volume, surface finish, and cost considerations.
