Servostyrningar, often translated as power steering, are a system that assists the driver in turning the steering wheel of a vehicle. There are several types of servostyrningar, with hydraulic and electric systems being the most common. Hydraulic servostyrningar use hydraulic fluid pressurized by a pump to provide assistance. This fluid is directed to a valve that, based on the driver's input, applies pressure to a piston in the steering rack or gearbox. Electric servostyrningar (EPS) use an electric motor to provide the assistance, offering advantages in terms of fuel efficiency and simpler integration with other vehicle electronic systems. Newer systems may also incorporate electro-hydraulic variations.

The operation of a servostyrning is initiated when the driver turns the steering wheel. Sensors detect the direction and force applied by the driver. This information is then processed, and the system engages to either pressurize hydraulic fluid or activate an electric motor to assist the steering movement. Modern servostyrningar can also adapt their level of assistance based on vehicle speed, providing more assistance at low speeds and less at higher speeds for better road feel.
