Senebetændelse, also known as tendinitis, is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of a tendon. Tendons are tough, fibrous cords of tissue that connect muscles to bones. This inflammation typically occurs when a tendon is overused, subjected to repetitive motion, or injured. Common symptoms include pain, tenderness, and a dull ache in the affected area, which can worsen with movement. Swelling and a gritty sensation when moving the tendon may also be present.

The causes of tendinitis are varied and often relate to overuse or sudden strain. Athletes, individuals with physically demanding jobs, or those who engage in repetitive activities are at higher risk. Examples include conditions like tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis), and Achilles tendinitis. Age can also be a factor, as tendons may become less flexible and more susceptible to injury over time.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, assessing the patient's symptoms and medical history. In some cases, imaging tests like ultrasound or MRI might be used to confirm the diagnosis or rule out other conditions. Treatment for tendinitis focuses on reducing inflammation and pain, and allowing the tendon to heal. This often includes rest, ice application, compression, and elevation (RICE). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to manage pain and reduce swelling. Physical therapy can be beneficial for strengthening the surrounding muscles and improving flexibility, which can help prevent recurrence. In severe or persistent cases, other treatments like corticosteroid injections or surgery might be considered.
