Semilucent is an adjective meaning partially luminous or glowing. In scientific contexts it is most often used in relation to high-altitude atmospheric phenomena, particularly semilucent or noctilucent clouds, which are sometimes described as semilucent due to their bright, halo-like appearance against twilight skies. The term derives from Latin sem- (“half”) and lucent (“shining”).

Semilucent clouds, also known as noctilucent or polar mesospheric clouds, form in the mesosphere at altitudes of roughly 76 to 85 kilometers (47 to 53 miles). They consist primarily of ice crystals that grow when water vapor is abundant and ambient temperatures are extremely cold. Conditions for their formation are relatively rare and occur mainly during summer at high latitudes, when the sun is below the horizon for extended periods, allowing sunlight to illuminate these otherwise dark clouds.

Observationally, semilucent clouds appear as delicate, blue-white patches or thread-like structures that shimmer after sunset or before sunrise. They are often best seen from northern or southern latitudes during twilight, under clear, dark skies, and can vary in brightness and extent from season to season.

In atmospheric science, semilucent clouds are monitored as indicators of mesospheric conditions and climate-related changes in the upper atmosphere. Some long-term observations suggest changes in frequency, brightness, or duration in recent decades, though natural variability is substantial and ongoing research continues to refine interpretations. The term semilucent is less common as a standalone descriptor outside technical literature, with semilucent clouds more typically referred to as noctilucent or polar mesospheric clouds.
