Selfmolding refers to processes and materials designed to form a mold, contour, or final shape with minimal external tooling or post-processing. In essence, a self-molding system uses intrinsic material properties or environmental triggers to acquire a target geometry, either by conforming to a pre-existing interface or by polymerizing, swelling, or flowing to fill a cavity.

Mechanisms underlying selfmolding include viscosity-controlled flow that fills features through capillary action, thermal softening of a polymer that then re-solidifies in place, and chemical curing that locks the material into a desired shape. Other approaches rely on swelling in response to humidity or solvent exposure, or on programmable materials such as shape-memory polymers and thixotropic elastomers that change form under mechanical or environmental stimuli. The result is a molded or replicated geometry achieved with reduced tooling or manual intervention.

Materials commonly involved range from low-viscosity polymers and hydrogels to silicone-based impression materials and smart polymers capable of in situ transformation. The specific choice depends on the required accuracy, surface finish, biocompatibility, and operating environment. Applications span domains such as dental impressions, where complex tooth geometries can be captured with simplified workflows; soft robotics and elastomeric molds for custom fittings; and rapid prototyping or custom-fit consumer devices where traditional tooling would be costly or time-consuming.

Advantages of selfmolding include reduced tooling requirements, faster production cycles, and improved conformity to intricate surfaces. Limitations involve variability in dimensional accuracy, sensitivity to temperature and humidity, material cost, and potential challenges in long-term stability or repeatability.
