Sejtfelületek, or cell surfaces, refer to the outer boundaries of cells, separating the interior of the cell from its external environment. In prokaryotic cells, the cell surface is typically a cell membrane, often surrounded by a cell wall. Eukaryotic cells possess a plasma membrane as their outer boundary, and some also have a cell wall, such as plant cells and fungi. The composition and structure of these surfaces are crucial for cell function, playing roles in protection, transport, communication, and adhesion.

The cell membrane is a selectively permeable barrier composed primarily of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins. This structure regulates the passage of substances into and out of the cell, a process essential for maintaining homeostasis. Cell surface proteins can act as channels, carriers, receptors, or enzymes, facilitating a wide range of cellular activities. For example, receptor proteins on the cell surface bind to signaling molecules, initiating intracellular responses.

In multicellular organisms, cell surfaces are vital for cell-cell recognition and adhesion. Specialized structures and molecules on the cell surface allow cells to interact with each other, forming tissues and organs. Cell junctions, such as tight junctions, desmosomes, and gap junctions, are formed by specialized regions of the cell surface that connect adjacent cells, providing structural support and enabling communication. The cell surface also plays a role in the immune system, as it displays markers that allow the body to distinguish between self and non-self cells.
