Seireandmed (surveillance data) refer to systematically collected, organized information that describes the occurrence and distribution of health-related events within a population. They are produced by public health authorities and research institutions to monitor diseases, risk factors, and health outcomes over time, and to support timely public health actions.

Sources include case reports from clinicians, laboratory-confirmed results, hospital discharge and primary-care data, sentinel surveillance networks, vital records such as deaths, vaccination registries, and sometimes environmental indicators.

Uses include estimating incidence and prevalence, tracking seasonality, detecting clusters or outbreaks, evaluating intervention effects (such as vaccination campaigns), and informing policy and resource allocation. Data are often summarized weekly or monthly and may be published in public dashboards or official reports; raw data may be shared with researchers under agreements.

Governance and privacy are central. Data are typically anonymized or aggregated; access is limited to authorized entities; data use is governed by legal frameworks, data-sharing agreements, and ethical reviews in many jurisdictions. Interoperability and standard data formats facilitate cross-system comparisons.

Limitations and quality: reporting lags, inconsistent case definitions, underreporting or bias, and variable coverage can affect accuracy. Ongoing work focuses on improving data completeness, timeliness, and comparability through standardization, quality assurance, and data linkage across sources.
