The term seigneurial refers to the system of feudal governance and land tenure that emerged in medieval Europe, particularly during the High and Late Middle Ages. It was centered around the relationship between a lord (or seigneur, meaning "lord" in French) and his vassals, who were bound by obligations in exchange for protection and land grants. This system was a cornerstone of the feudal order, shaping political, economic, and social structures across much of Europe.

Under the seigneurial system, land was held in fief, a hereditary grant from the lord to a vassal, who in turn owed military service, financial contributions, and labor (such as corvée) in return. The lord exercised authority over the peasants who lived on his lands, often imposing taxes, regulating trade, and enforcing labor duties. While the system varied by region, it generally reinforced hierarchical relationships, with the nobility at the top and serfs at the bottom, bound to the land they tilled.

The seigneurial system also influenced legal and administrative practices, as lords maintained courts and enforced local laws. Over time, economic changes—such as the rise of towns, the Black Death, and the growth of merchant classes—weakened its dominance. By the late Middle Ages, the system began to decline, though remnants persisted in some rural areas until the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
