Gravity also plays a role, particularly in mass wasting events like landslides and debris flows. Precipitation intensity and duration are significant factors, as heavy rainfall can dislodge soil particles and create surface runoff, carrying sediment downstream. The slope of the land influences erosion rates; steeper slopes are more susceptible to sediment movement. Vegetation cover is a crucial natural regulator, as plant roots stabilize soil and foliage intercepts rainfall, reducing its impact.
Human activities, however, are often major contributors to increased sediment causes. Deforestation for agriculture, logging, or
