In a typical sedimentation pipeline setup, the fluid containing suspended solids flows through a conduit, often a long, horizontal or slightly inclined pipe. As the flow velocity decreases, the gravitational force causes the solid particles to settle out of the fluid stream and accumulate at the bottom of the pipe. This accumulated material, known as sludge or sediment, can then be periodically or continuously removed from the system.

The design of sedimentation pipelines considers factors such as flow rate, particle size and density, fluid viscosity, and the required degree of clarification. The length and diameter of the pipeline, as well as any internal baffles or flow modifiers, are optimized to maximize settling efficiency while minimizing space requirements.
