Seaskimming is a coastal water sport in which riders glide along the sea surface on a flat board or by using a minimal-contact technique to stay near the surface. It is related to skimboarding and differs from traditional surfing in that riders use the water’s surface and shallow runs rather than riding a defined break on a long board.

Typical practice occurs in nearshore zones with a gentle beach slope and shallow water. Equipment usually includes a skimboard or similarly flat board, wax or grip aids, and swimwear. Technique focuses on balance, weight transfer, and timing to catch small waves or to ride the wake of a breaking wave, keeping the board skimming on the surface.

History: Seaskimming grew from skimboarding traditions on sunny beaches in the mid-20th century and has since spread to many coastal regions, giving rise to regional styles and informal competitions.

Safety and environment: The sport carries risk of falls, head or joint injuries, and impact with rocks or boats. Participants should practice in designated areas, use appropriate protective gear where recommended, and be mindful of tides, currents, and other beach users. Environmental considerations include minimizing impact on sandy shores and avoiding sensitive habitats.

Other uses: The term sea-skimming is also used in aviation and missile technology to describe very low-altitude flight over the sea, a different context from the sport.
