Searescue, also written as sea rescue, refers to the organized actions taken to locate, assist, and recover people in danger at sea. It encompasses locating those in distress, providing medical treatment, stabilizing survivors, and transferring them to safety or medical facilities. Searescue mobilizes ships, aircraft, rescue lifeboats, and shore-based authorities.

Coordination is typically managed through national rescue coordination centers (RCCs) and regional search and rescue (SAR) authorities. When a distress event is reported, the RCC activates a rescue plan, allocates resources, and coordinates between on-scene vessels, helicopters, coast guard units, and, if needed, naval forces or civilian organizations.

The legal framework for searescue includes international and national obligations. The International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR Convention) of 1979 provides a global framework for cooperation in maritime distress situations. The Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention sets equipment and readiness standards for ships. Distress signaling traditionally uses Mayday calls and, in modern systems, digital selective calling (DSC) via radio.

Actors and equipment involved include coast guards, navies, merchant fleets, and civilian volunteers who operate or support SAR services. Equipment commonly employed comprises rescue vessels, fast rescue craft, lifeboats, helicopters, radar, radios, AIS transceivers, and onboard medical facilities or staging points for treatment.

Procedures typically begin with a Mayday or equivalent alert, followed by a surge of coordinated searching—sector searches, aerial sweeps, and other patterns—until a target is located. Rescue teams then stabilize and evacuate survivors, arrange medical care, and log outcomes. Searescue has evolved through national programs and international cooperation, with NGOs playing a supplementary role in regions with limited governmental resources.
