The process involves the interaction of incident radiation with a scintillating material, which can be inorganic crystals (like sodium iodide doped with thallium), organic scintillators (like plastic or liquid scintillators), or gases. This interaction excites the material, causing it to emit photons, typically in the visible or ultraviolet spectrum. These emitted photons are then collected and converted into an electrical signal by a photodetector, such as a photomultiplier tube (PMT) or a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM). The intensity and timing of this electrical signal provide information about the incident radiation. The performance of a scintillationbased system is dependent on factors such as the scintillation material's light output, decay time, and transparency, as well as the efficiency of the photodetector.
