Schuimende is a Dutch adjective that means foaming or frothing. It is derived from the verb schuimen, to foam, and is used to describe liquids or systems in which gas bubbles are formed and stabilized at the surface. In everyday language it can modify nouns such as schuimende melk (foaming milk), schuimende zeep (foaming soap), or schuimende vloeistof (foaming liquid).

In scientific and industrial contexts, schuimende refers to fluids that tend to produce foam during agitation, aeration, or processing. Foam formation depends on the presence of surface-active substances (surfactants), the amount of gas introduced, liquid viscosity, temperature, and shear forces. Stable foams are maintained by surfactants or polymers that create a viscoelastic film around each bubble, slowing drainage and rupture. Foam behavior can affect mixing, heat transfer, separation, and hygiene, and excessive foam can lead to overflow or contamination risks, while insufficient foam may impair certain products or processes.

Control and management of schuimende systems involve either reducing or promoting foam. Defoaming or anti-foaming agents (such as silicone oils or mineral oils), changes in formulation, temperature, and agitation can reduce foam. Conversely, foaming can be encouraged by adding foaming agents or adjusting surfactant concentration in applications like cleaning, beverage production, or fermentation.
