A schakelaarsrouter, often referred to as a managed switch or a Layer 3 switch, combines the functionality of a network switch with some routing capabilities. While a traditional unmanaged switch simply forwards data packets between devices on the same local network based on MAC addresses, a managed switch offers more advanced control and configuration. A schakelaarsrouter goes a step further by being able to operate at Layer 3 of the OSI model, which is the network layer responsible for IP addressing and routing.

This dual functionality allows a schakelaarsrouter to perform both switching within a local area network (LAN) and routing between different networks. This means it can connect multiple LANs together, much like a dedicated router, but also efficiently switch traffic within each of those LANs. They are typically used in larger networks where segmenting traffic and improving performance is crucial. For instance, a schakelaarsrouter can be configured to create Virtual LANs (VLANs), which logically separate network traffic even if devices are physically connected to the same switch.

The routing capabilities of a schakelaarsrouter enable it to make decisions about the best path for data to travel across different networks. This is achieved by examining the IP addresses in the packet headers. Compared to a separate router and switch, a schakelaarsrouter can offer performance advantages as it often processes packets at much higher speeds for inter-VLAN routing. The management features also allow network administrators to monitor traffic, prioritize certain types of data, and implement security policies.
