In stage productions, backdrops may be hand-painted on canvas or muslin, pre-printed vinyl or fabric, or cycloramas that form a curved wall behind the action. In photography and film, backdrops are often photographic or digitally printed vinyl or paper panels that can be rapidly swapped or rolled out to suit different scenes.

Materials and construction vary by use. Painted backdrops are typically stretched over battens or hung on a frame; cycloramas use a curved surface to minimize seam lines. Modern backdrops frequently rely on digital printing to reproduce complex scenes, landscapes, or cityscapes, often paired with controlled lighting to enhance depth and realism. Lighter-weight fabrics and portable roller systems have expanded the mobility of backdrops for touring productions and on-location shoots.

Care and safety practices include ensuring flame retardancy where required, maintaining colorfastness under stage lighting, and cleaning with appropriate methods. Storage is usually rolled or laid flat to prevent creases, and proper rigging and load limits are essential to prevent accidents during setup and performance.

History and trends show a progression from hand-painted scenery in traditional theatres to large cycloramas and, since the late 20th century, digitally printed images. Today, scenerybackdrops may combine painted elements with digital projections and LED displays for flexible, cost-effective environments.
