scalarp

Scalarp is a term used in some speculative physics discussions and fictional contexts to denote a hypothetical scalar particle, that is, a boson with zero spin. The word is a portmanteau of scalar and particle and is not part of the standard nomenclature in mainstream particle physics, where authors typically refer to scalar bosons or to the specific field involved (for example, the Higgs boson or an inflaton).

In a typical theoretical framework, a scalarp would be described by a real scalar field φ. Its dynamics are governed by a Lagrangian that includes a kinetic term and a mass term, along with a potential encoding self-interactions or couplings to other fields. A generic form is L = 1/2 ∂_μ φ ∂^μ φ - 1/2 m^2 φ^2 - V_int(φ, ...). The particle’s mass m and its self-interaction potential depend on the chosen model. Scalars have spin 0 and are bosons; they can be neutral or, in extended theories, carry charge.

Interactions of a scalarp are model-dependent. They may couple to Standard Model fields via Yukawa-like terms or to gauge bosons, enabling production in high-energy collisions or decays of heavier states. Proposed roles for scalarp-like particles include mediating new forces, contributing to dark matter phenomenology, or acting as inflaton candidates in cosmology.

Status: there is no experimental confirmation of a scalarp. The term surfaces mainly in speculative papers and science fiction, where it often serves as a generic light scalar mediator or a placeholder for new physics beyond the Standard Model.
