SatellitenDNA, also known as satellite DNA, refers to a class of highly repetitive, noncoding DNA sequences that occur in tandem arrays throughout a genome. These repeats are typically organized into long blocks and can span from thousands to millions of base pairs. They are often found in heterochromatic regions, particularly near centromeres and telomeres, and are frequently species- or lineage-specific in sequence.

In many organisms, including humans, alpha-satellite DNA forms prominent arrays at centromeres and is associated with centromere structure and kinetochore formation. Other satellite families, such as beta- or gamma-satellite DNA, predominate in pericentromeric regions. Copy number and array length of satDNA can vary greatly among individuals and species, contributing to differences in genome size and chromosomal organization.

SatellitenDNA evolves rapidly through mechanisms like unequal crossing over and gene conversion, a process known as concerted evolution. This leads to high sequence homogeneity within a species while allowing divergence between species. Although satDNA is noncoding, it can influence chromatin architecture, chromosome pairing, and genome stability. In some contexts, transcripts derived from satellite repeats have been detected and may have regulatory roles, though these functions are not universal.
