Sappikirurgian, often referred to as cholecystectomy, is a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small organ located beneath the liver that stores and releases bile, a fluid produced by the liver to aid in digestion. While the gallbladder plays a role in digestion, it is not essential for life, and many people live healthy lives after its removal.

The most common reason for gallstone surgery is symptomatic gallstones, which are hardened deposits of digestive fluid that can form in the gallbladder. These stones can cause pain, inflammation, and other complications. Other indications for gallbladder removal include inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis), polyps in the gallbladder, or precancerous changes.

The procedure is most commonly performed laparoscopically, a minimally invasive technique that involves making several small incisions in the abdomen. A laparoscope, a thin, lighted tube with a camera, is inserted through one incision to visualize the gallbladder. Surgical instruments are then inserted through the other incisions to detach and remove the gallbladder. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy typically results in a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, and less scarring compared to traditional open surgery.

In some cases, open cholecystectomy may be necessary. This involves a larger incision in the abdomen to access and remove the gallbladder. Open surgery is usually reserved for more complex cases, such as severe inflammation, adhesions from previous surgeries, or if the laparoscopic approach is not feasible.

Following surgery, most individuals experience a rapid recovery. While some dietary adjustments might be recommended initially, the body adapts to digesting food without a gallbladder. Complications are rare but can include infection, bleeding, or injury to nearby organs.
