sannyas

Sannyas is a Sanskrit word that denotes renunciation or the act of abandoning worldly life, often for spiritual pursuits. It refers to a stage of life in traditional Hindu philosophy, particularly within the context of the ashrama system, where an individual dedicates themselves to asceticism, meditation, and the search for ultimate truth. A person who has taken sannyas is known as a sannyasin or renunciate.

The sannyasin typically shaves their head, wears simple saffron or ochre robes, and abandons possessions, family ties, and social obligations. Their life is characterized by detachment from material desires and a focus on spiritual liberation (moksha). They often travel from place to place, living on alms and engaging in contemplation and study of scriptures.

While traditionally associated with Hinduism, the concept of renunciation and asceticism finds parallels in other Indian religions like Buddhism and Jainism. The path of sannyas is not merely about physical detachment but also involves a profound inner transformation, cultivating virtues such as compassion, non-violence (ahimsa), and equanimity.
