Sanaluokan, literally meaning "word class" in Finnish, is a central concept in linguistics used to classify words by shared grammatical properties. A sanaluokka specifies how words behave in sentences, how they inflect, and where they can appear syntactically. In Finnish linguistic tradition the major sanaluokat commonly recognized are substantiivit (nouns), verbit (verbs), adjektiivit (adjectives), pronominit (pronouns), lukusanat (numerals), adverbit (adverbs), prepositiot (prepositions), konjunktiot (conjunctions), partikkelit (particles), and interjektiot (interjections).

Word classes are typically divided into open and closed classes. Open classes — including nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and numerals — readily admit new members as the language evolves. Closed classes — such as pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections — change more slowly and usually gain new items only under unusual circumstances or borrowings.

Analyses of sanaluokat rely on distributional criteria: the position of a word in a phrase, the syntactic functions it can perform, and the morphological forms it takes. This makes sanaluokan a useful tool for grammar descriptions, language teaching, and natural language processing. Cross-linguistically, the set and boundaries of word classes vary; some languages merge categories, others split them, and some allow certain forms to function across several classes depending on usage.

In Finnish educational materials, sanaluokan knowledge supports sentence parsing, guides agreement and concord, and aids in predicting inflection. The concept remains a standard element of general linguistics as well as language-specific grammars.
