Samhälle is a Swedish term that denotes the organized social life of a group, region, or country. It encompasses the institutions, social relations, norms, and values that bind people together and enable collective life beyond the immediate family.

Elements commonly considered part of samhället include family and kin networks, educational systems, workplaces, legal and political institutions, healthcare and social security systems, media, religion, and voluntary associations. The economy and the state interact with civil society to produce and reproduce social order.

Key processes in samhället include socialization, which transmits norms and roles; social stratification and inequality related to class, gender, ethnicity, and age; social cohesion and identity formation; and change driven by technology, policy, migration, and cultural trends. Institutions shape and are shaped by collective expectations, behaviors, and power relations.

In Sweden and many Nordic countries, the concept of samhället is closely linked to the welfare state and democratic governance, with emphasis on universal services, public accountability, and social rights. The idea also covers the balance between public authority, private enterprise, and civil society, as well as the rule of law and human rights.
