A salaojaputki, commonly translated as a French drain or drain tile, is a type of drainage system used to manage excess groundwater. It typically consists of a perforated pipe buried in a gravel-filled trench. The perforations in the pipe allow water to enter, and gravity then carries the water away from the area, preventing waterlogging and potential structural damage.

These systems are widely used in construction and landscaping. In building foundations, salaojaputki help to keep basements and crawl spaces dry by intercepting and diverting groundwater that might otherwise seep into the structure. Around building perimeters, they can reduce hydrostatic pressure against foundation walls. In agricultural settings and gardens, salaojaputki are employed to improve soil drainage, which is crucial for plant health and preventing crop damage or soil erosion.

The construction of a salaojaputki involves digging a trench, often with a slight slope. A layer of gravel is placed at the bottom, followed by the perforated pipe, which is then covered with more gravel. Geotextile fabric is frequently used to wrap the gravel and pipe, preventing soil and fine particles from clogging the system. The gravel provides a permeable medium for water to flow to the pipe, while the fabric acts as a filter. The effectiveness of a salaojaputki depends on proper installation, including correct slope and adequate gravel depth, to ensure efficient water removal.
