A saddlecloth is a piece of fabric, felt, foam or composite material placed between a horse's back and a saddle. Its primary functions are to cushion the horse and rider, distribute pressure, absorb sweat, and protect both the saddle and the horse's skin from friction. Saddlecloths vary in thickness, shape and construction to suit different disciplines, horses and saddles.

Common types include saddle blankets, numnahs, saddle pads and half pads. Traditional saddle blankets are flat woven pieces used in Western riding, while numnahs — contoured or rectangular — fit closer to the saddle tree and are common in English disciplines. Modern saddle pads may incorporate foam or gel for shock absorption and are sometimes fitted with removable shims to adjust saddle fit. Materials range from wool and cotton to synthetic fleece and technical fabrics designed for moisture wicking and breathability.

Proper fit is important: a pad should lie smoothly without excessive bulk under the saddle, avoid pressure points, and allow freedom of the shoulder. Signs of poor fit include soreness, white hair, or uneven sweat patterns. Routine care depends on materials but generally involves regular brushing, spot cleaning and periodic washing or airing to prevent odor and deterioration.

In horse racing, the term saddlecloth also denotes the numbered, often colored cloth used to display a horse’s race number and stable colors. Saddlecloths have both practical and aesthetic roles across equestrian activities.
