Sårkanterna refers to the edges of a wound. The condition and appearance of these edges are important indicators for healing progression and potential complications. In medical contexts, observing sårkanterna helps assess the wound's status.

Healthy sårkanterna are typically smooth, well-defined, and may appear slightly pink or reddish due to increased blood flow to the area, which is a sign of active healing. There might be a small amount of serous fluid, a clear or slightly yellowish discharge, which is normal. Over time, the sårkanterna will begin to migrate inwards, a process called epithelialization, gradually closing the wound.

Conversely, unhealthy sårkanterna can exhibit various signs of concern. Redness, swelling, and increased warmth around the edges can indicate infection. If the sårkanterna are ragged, irregular, or appear necrotic (dark and dead tissue), it suggests poor blood supply or damage to the surrounding tissue, hindering healing. Maceration, where the skin around the wound becomes waterlogged and pale due to excessive moisture, can also weaken the sårkanterna and make them more susceptible to breakdown. Furthermore, if the sårkanterna are curled inwards and hindering closure, it is termed "epibole."

The assessment of sårkanterna is a crucial part of wound care management, guiding treatment decisions such as debridement, dressing selection, and the need for antibiotics.
