røyskatt

Røyskatt is the Norwegian name for the least weasel, scientifically known as Mustela nivalis. This small carnivorous mammal is the smallest species of the family Mustelidae and is found across much of the Northern Hemisphere. In Norway, røyskatter inhabit a variety of environments, including forests, open fields, and even near human settlements. They are known for their slender bodies, short legs, and long tails.

The diet of the røyskatt consists primarily of small rodents such as voles and mice, but they will also prey on birds, eggs, and insects. Despite their small size, they are fierce hunters and are capable of taking down prey larger than themselves. Their agility and speed allow them to pursue prey through burrows and dense vegetation.

Røyskatter are solitary animals, coming together only to breed. Females typically give birth to litters of four to nine young. The young are born blind and helpless and develop rapidly. In the northern parts of their range, including Norway, the røyskatt's coat changes from brown in the summer to white in the winter, providing camouflage against the snow. This seasonal color change is a key characteristic and a common sight in Norwegian winters.
