Räystäiden, or eaves, are the overhanging edges of a roof that project beyond the exterior walls. Their primary purpose is to shed rainwater away from the walls and foundation, protecting structural timber, masonry, windows, and doors. Eaves also help shade upper-storey windows and contribute to the building’s silhouette and architectural character.

An eave typically includes an underside (soffit or ceiling), a fascia along the edge, and may incorporate gutters and downpipes to channel water away. Some designs expose structural rafters or create a closed soffit enclosure; others use decorative brackets or trim. The length and pitch of eaves vary with climate, roof type, and aesthetic aims.

Design choices reflect climate and maintenance needs. In wet or snowy regions, longer overhangs help keep walls dry and facilitate drainage; in hot climates, extended eaves provide shade to reduce solar gain. Materials range from timber and plaster to metal or composite panels, selected for durability, weather resistance, and compatibility with the roof and façade.

Maintenance focuses on keeping soffits and fascia sound and free of rot, and ensuring gutters and downpipes are clear and functional. As visible components of the façade, räystäät often contribute to regional architectural identity, from functional modernist examples to traditional Nordic designs.
