An eave is the part of a roof that overhangs the exterior wall of a building. The eave projects beyond the wall face and forms the lower edge of the roof. The term is used in reference to both the singular “eave” and the plural “eaves.”

Eaves serve several practical purposes. They help shed rain away from the building envelope, protect walls from weather, and provide shade that can reduce heat gain in warm climates. The extent of the overhang is determined by architectural style, climate, and structural considerations.

Typical components attached to an eave include the fascia board along the lower edge, the soffit beneath the eave, and the rafters or truss tails that extend beyond the wall line. Gutters and downspouts are commonly attached to the eave to collect and channel rainwater.

Design variants range from open or exposed eaves, where rafter tails are visible, to closed or boxed eaves, where soffit panels enclose the underside. Some eaves are extended as large canopies, while others are short and minimal, depending on style and function.

Material and maintenance considerations include timber, plywood, metal, or composite soffits, and fascia boards. Proper ventilation of the roof space, flashing at joints, and weatherproofing help prevent leaks and moisture damage.
