Räknesystem, or numeral system, refers to a method of representing numbers using a set of symbols according to specific rules. These systems are fundamental to mathematics and allow for the quantification and manipulation of quantities. The most commonly used system today is the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, also known as the decimal system. This system is positional, meaning the value of a digit depends on its position within the number. It uses ten digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Each position represents a power of ten, with the rightmost digit representing units (10^0), the next digit to the left representing tens (10^1), then hundreds (10^2), and so on.

Historically, various other numeral systems have existed. The Roman numeral system, for instance, uses letters such as I, V, X, L, C, D, and M to represent numbers. It is largely an additive system with some subtractive rules, and it is not positional, making complex calculations cumbersome. Ancient civilizations also developed systems such as the Babylonian sexagesimal system, which used base 60, and the Mayan numeral system, which was vigesimal (base 20). The choice of base in a numeral system influences the number of unique digits required and the way numbers are represented. Modern computing heavily relies on the binary numeral system, which has a base of 2 and uses only two digits, 0 and 1, reflecting the on/off states of electronic circuits.
