Ryðvarnir, or rust protection, refers to the set of measures and practices used to prevent rust, or iron oxide formation, on metal surfaces, especially iron and steel. Rusting occurs when iron reacts with water and oxygen, often accelerated by electrolytes such as salt. Ryðvarnir aim to slow or stop this process to extend structural life and reduce maintenance costs.

Protection is achieved mainly through barrier methods, sacrificial methods, and inhibitors. Barrier methods place a protective layer between metal and the environment, including paints, varnishes, oil or grease, polymer coatings, and powder coatings. Passivation and the use of inherently corrosion-resistant alloys, such as stainless steel, create stable surface oxides that slow further corrosion. Cathodic protection uses an external electrical current or a more easily corroded metal (sacrificial anode) to drive corrosion away from the protected metal.
