Rhythmic phenomena of interest include syncopation, swing, polyrhythm and cross-rhythm, hemiola, isorhythm, and additive rhythmic systems. The study often examines how rhythms establish meter, how accents interact with metric structure, and how rhythmic patterns contribute to musical form. Cross-cultural rhythm theory compares practices such as Indian tala, West African polyrhythms, and Javanese gamelan techniques.

Historically, rytmeteori has evolved from medieval rhythmic modes of the Notre Dame school to a broad field that includes proportional rhythms of the Baroque, the more flexible metric practices of later periods, and contemporary analytical and computational approaches. Modern rhythm theory employs mathematical models, metrical analysis, and algorithmic methods to analyze, simulate, or generate rhythmic structures.
