Ruumikulus is a rare and enigmatic species of deep-sea crustacean belonging to the order *Stomatopoda*, commonly known as mantis shrimp. The name "ruumikulus" is derived from a combination of the Latinized term for "deep" (*ruum*) and the diminutive suffix *-culus*, suggesting its small size relative to other stomatopod species. This species was first described in 2017 by marine biologists studying the hadal zone, one of the deepest oceanic regions, located between 6,000 and 11,000 meters below sea level.

Ruumikulus exhibits several distinctive adaptations for its extreme environment. Its translucent exoskeleton allows light to penetrate, aiding in camouflage against the dim, scattered light that filters down from the surface. The species possesses elongated, appendage-like limbs used for both locomotion and sensory perception, enabling it to navigate the crushing pressures and near-freezing temperatures of its habitat. Unlike many other stomatopods, ruumikulus lacks the powerful, club-like raptorial appendages typically used for hunting, suggesting it may rely on scavenging or filter-feeding for sustenance.

Little is known about its behavior or life cycle due to the challenges of studying organisms in the hadal zone. Specimens are rarely encountered, and research relies heavily on deep-sea submersibles and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). The discovery of ruumikulus highlights the ongoing exploration of Earth’s least-explored ecosystems, where new species continue to be identified despite the harsh conditions.

Conservation efforts for ruumikulus are minimal due to its remote habitat and lack of direct human interaction. However, the broader hadal zone faces threats from deep-sea mining, climate change, and pollution, which could indirectly impact such fragile ecosystems. Further research is needed to better understand its role in deep-sea biodiversity and the potential risks it may face in the future.
