One common approach is mechanical rust removal. This involves physically abrading the rust away. Tools like wire brushes, sandpaper, steel wool, or grinding wheels can be employed. For larger areas or more stubborn rust, sandblasting or media blasting, where abrasive particles are propelled at high speed, is effective. These methods are generally quick but can alter the surface finish of the metal, sometimes leaving it with a rougher texture.

Chemical rust removers are another category of methods. These substances contain acids or chelating agents that react with the rust, dissolving it or converting it into a more manageable form. Phosphoric acid and oxalic acid are common acidic components. After application, the dissolved rust can often be wiped or rinsed away. Electrolysis is a more advanced technique that uses an electric current to remove rust. The rusted object is submerged in an electrolyte solution (often washing soda and water) and connected to the negative terminal of a power source, while a piece of scrap steel is connected to the positive terminal. The current causes the rust to transfer from the object to the scrap metal. This method is very effective at removing rust even from intricate areas and preserves the original metal surface.

Finally, rust converters are products that chemically change rust into a stable, black, paintable surface. They don't remove the rust entirely but transform it, providing a primer-like layer for subsequent painting. This is often used when complete rust removal is impractical.
