The Hungarian term derives from the word “rugany”, which historically denotes resilience or bentness, combined with the suffix “-osság”, used to form abstract nouns expressing qualities or states. Although the literal translation may evoke an image of a flexible yet enduring material, in everyday usage the word describes a personality type that is stubborn or obstinate, often to the point of inflexibility.

In psychology, ruganyosság may overlap with concepts such as trait persistence and conscientiousness, but it is distinct in its negative connotation of rigidity. People described as ruganyosságos tend to maintain their views and behaviors despite external pressures or logical counterarguments, and they often show a protective relationship between self-identity and their chosen stance. While such tenacity can foster commitment and perseverance, it can also cause interpersonal friction and impede adaptability.
