Rovarméregallergia refers to an allergic reaction to the venom of stinging insects, most commonly wasps, bees, hornets, and ants. When these insects sting, they inject venom into the skin, which contains various proteins and enzymes. In most individuals, this venom causes a localized, immediate reaction with pain, redness, and swelling at the sting site. However, in individuals with rovarméregallergia, their immune system mistakenly identifies these venom components as harmful and mounts an exaggerated response.

The symptoms of an allergic reaction can range from mild to severe. Mild reactions typically involve widespread hives, itching, and swelling beyond the immediate sting area. More severe systemic reactions, known as anaphylaxis, can be life-threatening. Anaphylaxis can manifest rapidly and include difficulty breathing, wheezing, a drop in blood pressure, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and loss of consciousness. Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical attention and treatment with epinephrine.

Diagnosis of rovarméregallergia is usually made through a combination of medical history, physical examination, and specific allergy testing, such as skin prick tests or blood tests (specific IgE tests) to identify sensitivity to particular insect venoms. Once diagnosed, management involves avoiding further stings and carrying an epinephrine auto-injector for emergency treatment of anaphylaxis. For individuals with a history of severe reactions, venom immunotherapy (allergy shots) may be recommended to desensitize the immune system to the insect venom, significantly reducing the risk of future severe reactions. Prevention strategies include being aware of insect nests, avoiding brightly colored clothing and strong perfumes when outdoors, and seeking professional help to remove insect nests from residential areas.
