Routersystemen, often simply referred to as routers, are fundamental networking devices that forward data packets between computer networks. They operate at the network layer (Layer 3) of the OSI model, making decisions based on IP addresses to determine the best path for data to travel from its source to its destination. Routers connect different networks, such as a home network to the internet, or various segments within a larger corporate network.

The primary function of a router is to examine the destination IP address of incoming data packets and consult its routing table. This table contains information about known network destinations and the interfaces or next-hop routers to use to reach them. Based on this information, the router forwards the packet to the appropriate outgoing interface. Routers also play a crucial role in managing network traffic, preventing congestion, and ensuring efficient communication.

Routers employ various routing protocols, like RIP, OSPF, and BGP, to dynamically learn and maintain information about network topology. These protocols allow routers to adapt to changes in the network, such as link failures or the addition of new networks, and to recalculate optimal paths. Security features are also common in modern routers, including firewalls and VPN capabilities, to protect networks from unauthorized access and threats.
