Route planning is the process of determining an optimal path or sequence of routes to reach a destination or complete a set of deliveries. It is used in transportation, logistics, emergency services, and travel planning to minimize travel time, distance, cost, or other objectives while satisfying constraints such as time windows and vehicle capacities.

In most modern systems, a route plan is formed by representing the transportation network as a graph, with nodes as locations (intersections, depots) and edges as road segments. Each edge carries a weight such as distance, travel time, or fuel cost, which may be static or dynamic based on traffic, weather, or road conditions. Inputs also include vehicle characteristics, delivery orders, time constraints, and service levels.

The primary goal is to produce a directed route or set of routes that minimizes a chosen objective, such as total travel time or distance, while respecting constraints. For multiple stops or vehicles, route planning often falls under vehicle routing problems (VRP) and related variants like VRP with time windows (VRPTW).

Algorithms include shortest-path techniques such as Dijkstra's and A*, which compute fastest or shortest routes on static graphs, and more advanced methods for multi-stop optimization, including Clarke–Wright savings, dynamic programming, and heuristics. In large networks, preprocessing and hierarchical approaches, as well as real-time rerouting, are used to scale computations and adapt to changing conditions.

Applications range from consumer navigation apps and public transit planning to logistics, fleet management, and emergency response. Advances increasingly incorporate real-time traffic data, multi-modal options, and predictive models to suggest routes that balance speed, reliability, and cost.

Challenges include data quality, traffic volatility, scalability for large fleets, privacy concerns, and the need to integrate multiple transport modes and constraints.
