Rotorokr, also known as rotorcraft, refers to a type of rotary-wing aircraft. Unlike fixed-wing aircraft which rely on wings for lift, rotorokr generate lift and thrust through the rotation of horizontal blades, or rotors. The most common examples of rotorokr are helicopters and autogyros.

Helicopters are characterized by their powered rotors, meaning the engine directly drives the main rotor system. This allows them to take off and land vertically, hover in place, and fly forward, backward, or sideways. Their ability to operate in confined spaces and from unconventional landing sites makes them highly versatile for applications such as search and rescue, medical transport, military operations, and aerial construction.

Autogyros, on the other hand, have an unpowered rotor that is driven by the airflow as the aircraft moves forward. Forward propulsion is typically provided by a separate propeller, similar to that of a fixed-wing aircraft. Autogyros cannot hover like helicopters but offer advantages such as greater speed and range in certain configurations and a simpler mechanical design. They are often used for recreational flying and some specialized surveillance tasks.

The fundamental principle behind rotorokr operation is aerodynamics. The rotating blades are essentially airfoils that generate lift as they move through the air. By tilting the rotor disc, the direction of thrust can be controlled, allowing for directional flight. Control of rotorokr is complex, involving cyclic and collective pitch controls that adjust the angle of the rotor blades individually or collectively to manage lift, direction, and attitude.
