Rotarypowered is a term used to describe machinery, vehicles, or systems that derive propulsion or mechanical power from rotary motion rather than linear reciprocating motion. In practice, rotarypowered designs rely on components that create or transmit rotation through a shaft or rotor, including rotary internal combustion engines, gas turbines, and electric motors.

The most well-known form is the rotary internal combustion engine, most notably the Wankel engine, which uses a triangular rotor inside a housing to convert pressure into rotation. Wankel engines are appreciated for their compact size, high power-to-weight ratio, and smooth operation, but have faced challenges with sealing, lubrication, and emissions. Other forms of rotary power include gas turbines and aero-derivative turbines, which produce high-speed rotation for propulsion or power generation, and electric motors, where electrical energy is converted into rotary motion in a rotor.

Historically, rotary-powered concepts appear in several domains. Early aviation featured true rotary engines in which the crankcase and cylinders rotated with the propeller, producing distinctive handling characteristics. In automotive history, the Wankel engine gained attention in the mid-20th century, with Mazda popularizing rotary-powered cars such as the RX-7 and RX-8. Rotary power also appears in marine propulsion and industrial drives, where turbines and rotary motors drive shafts and gears.

Applications of rotarypowered systems span automobiles, aircraft, ships, and industrial machinery, as well as electric-drive systems that require robust, high-speed rotation. Benefits include compact form factor, reduced vibration, and high rotational speeds, while drawbacks can involve efficiency, emissions, durability of rotary seals, and maintenance requirements.
